Appreciate the unique and wild beauty of our country during the three carefully selected guided hikes over the course of the weekend. Have time to reflect around a campfire at night before retiring to your accommodation nestled under the towering cliffs of the breathtaking Amphitheatre. Let’s go hiking and make your dream of visiting the untamed beauty of the Drakensberg a reality.
Our planned arrival time at our base camp will be for 2PM. The trip down is approximately a 5 hour drive from Johannesburg to the Royal Natal National Park. After settling into our rooms, we will go on a short afternoon hike to Fairy Glen and take in the views of the Amphitheatre while stretching our legs after the drive down.
The Fairy Glen hike is a shorter hike of approximately 4km. We criss-cross beautiful mountain streams to reach the waterfall set in the most serene and magical glen.
There will be a braai for dinner and a relaxing campfire to end the day.
Start the day with a hearty breakfast before setting out on the Tugela Gorge hike. We suggest taking binoculars on the hike since there is a chance of spotting Lammergeier (bearded vulture), a very large vulture only found in the Drakensberg region, amongst a multitude of other birds and animals.
We will enjoy a picnic lunch in one of the many serene and beautiful locations along the hike before returning to camp. The Tugela Gorge hike is one of the most incredible hikes our country has to offer. This hike is approximately 22km in total but worth every metre! You will cross the Tugela River often, explore “the tunnel”, the “tunnel cave” and look directly up at the towering walls of the Amphitheatre and the mighty Sentinel.
Dinner will be served around the campfire, whereafter guests will retire to their mountain chalets for a good night’s rest.
The last day will start with an early breakfast before we set off for the Gudu Falls. This beautiful hike passes the Tiger Falls taking us deep into the Gudu bush and to the breathtaking Gudu Falls. This is a 9km hike where we will enjoy an early lunch at the falls before returning to camp to leave for our journey back to the city.
Drakensberg is extremely popular and booked well in advance. The accommodation options of Thendele Camp or Hlalanathi Drakensberg Resort are of the same standard with majestic views of the Amphitheatre. The accommodation selection is subject to availability and will be communicated to clients 14 days before the arrival date.
The trip plan has been carefully designed to make optimal use of the time available; this tour commences at 2PM.
Flights must be selected with the earliest possible arrival times, and guests should arrive giving themselves enough time to be at the tour location at 2PM on Day 1 of the tour. A suggestion may be to arrive the day before the tour start date and book into one of the many airport hotels at our Johannesburg International Airport.

We highly recommend that you have travel insurance and/or comprehensive medical insurance in case of an emergency. It is necessary to provide us with this information before you arrive so that we can assist in ensuring you have access to private healthcare facilities and services.
The alternative is government healthcare facilities where you may not receive specialised treatment.
There are larger units available at a number of the venues. We will strive to book these as per guests requests and needs.
